2019 advocacy agenda
On April 29, Dominion President Thomas D. Irvine, CD, sent a letter to all Members of Parliament to advocate for actions that will improve the well-being of our Veteran community and show them the respect they deserve. Share the Legion’s positions with your members.
The Legion does not associate with hate-based organizations
On May 2, CBC published a news article with information that a Legion Branch in Alberta rented their facility to the Soldiers of Odin, an organization known to have extremist views.
Our Dominion President responded to the article, denouncing the Branch’s involvement with that organization and committing to strengthen Legion policies to prevent future associations with organizations that promote hatred or violence.

Important changes to the use of Poppy Funds
In April, the Dominion Executive Council approved a number of key amendments to the Poppy Manual. Included are changes to authorized Special Use Expenditures, and expenditures that are no longer authorized.
New National Executive Director at Legion House
The Legion National Headquarters welcomes Steven Clark to the role of National Executive Director, with the mandate to advance the direction of the organization and implement the Legion’s Strategic Plan.

Operation VetBuild
The Royal Canadian Legion, led by the Legion’s Operational Stress Injury Special Section, initiated Operation VetBuild, a new national peer to peer program to support Veteran well-being through model-building.
As the program expands nationally, we are looking for Legion Branches across the country who would like to host the program at their location.

Help commemorate the Liberation of Holland
The Royal Canadian Legion is partnering with the National Tulip Festival this year to help commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Holland.
Branches are encouraged to support this initiative by helping to promote it to members and holding special commemorative ceremonies at their locations this year. Stay tuned for more information for Branches.

D-Day pins are now permitted for wear
The Dominion Executive Council has authorized the Legion’s D-Day Commemorative lapel pin for wear on Legion Dress until December 31, 2019. It is permitted to be worn on the right lapel of the Legion blazer along with the current “We Support Our Troops” lapel pin.

Veterans Affairs Canada has D-Day posters, postcards, historical sheets and bookmarks available for order. Help commemorate D-Day by ordering resources for your Branch.

The Royal Canadian Legion is proud of its Legion Riders, an initiative offering members the opportunity to support their community while enjoying their love of motorcycling.

Member data privacy and anti-spam compliance
Legion Headquarters, Provincial Commands and Branches are each responsible for their own compliance with applicable privacy laws and with Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). As a general guideline, most experts recommend reviewing policies annually.
Legion.ca has been updated to inform members and the public of the collection, use and disclosure of information by National Headquarters.

When you share updates on social media, think about how your tweet, Facebook post or other social media item relates to the Legion’s mission and include that in your wording.

The Legion’s new Member Services Website is a gateway to convenient branch-specific and membership information and services, including simplified new member sign-ups and renewals.
Branches can login to portal.legion.ca with the username and password provided.
PER CAPITA TAX RATES
The 2019 per capita tax rates can be viewed on the Member Services Website under Branch and Command Resources / Membership.
2020 Two-Part Renewal Stickers
Ensure your renewing members receive their 2020 renewal stickers. Process online or send in your member renewals by July 15, 2019 to receive their 2020 stickers. Stickers will be mailed to Branches end of August 2019.
